Guest Post: Adventures of a Substitute Teacher

Hola amigos!
Read on to hear from the famous substitute teacher from my school! She was my student teacher last year and is patiently awaiting her our class (good luck Sandra!). Until she gets the joy of her own classroom, she is subbing at our school and is rocking it! She is learning from each classroom she enters and is ready to share her adventures here on my little blog each Sunday!

Hello bloggy world!
I will be guest blogging here at KindergartenSchmindergarten on Sundays to share my adventures as a substitute teacher! I finished up my student teaching in Vanessa’s class in April and have now been given the opportunity to be a substitute teacher at her amazing school! I sub for grades K-6 and it has been a fantastic learning experience so far.

Today, I want to share with all you teachers out there what type of class is a substitute’s DREAM! I have subbed in classes that feel like chaos and classes that are set up to run so smoothly that they nearly run themselves! I am talking about classroom management and routines! When I walk into a class that is organized with a clear behavior management system and explicit routines, it makes my day (and the students’ day) fun and productive! Also, a substitute teacher binder ensures that the day runs just how the students are used to it running.  Erin from Creating and Teaching (http://creatingandteaching.blogspot.com/2011/06/substitute-binder.html) has a great FREE substitute teacher binder pack on TPT that I highly recommend! http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Substitute-Teacher-Binder-Pack

I know Vanessa has shared her Kindergarten’s behavior management system in a previous post, and I can tell you from experience that it is extremely effective with the kindergarteners. Since I have been subbing in other grades, I wanted to share another type of behavior management system that is really effective with older students and is used by many classrooms in this school (which also makes my job easier!). The system is called CHAMPS. It is basically a very clear and consistent way to share expectations with the class. The “C” stands for Conversation. Students look here to see if they should be using a “whisper voice” or if their voices should be off, etc. The “H” stands for Help. Students look here to see if they can ask a neighbor for help, or if they need to raise their hand and wait for the teacher, etc. The “A” stands for Activity. This shows students what is going on at a particular time and corresponds to the daily schedule. This is a great system because you can easily use it to communicate expectations for all the different daily activities. The “M” stands for Movement. Students look here to see if they can move freely around the room, if they should be at the rug, seated at their desk, etc. The “P” stands for Participation. Students look here to see if they should be working independently, with a partner, in groups, etc. The “S” typically stands for Success. Students earn a happy face, sticker, etc. for meeting expectations during each activity of the day. This is positive behavioral support, just like in Vanessa’s class, and it is so effective at both motivating students to follow expectations as well as building self-esteem. A little later, I will share a great example of something the first grade uses for the “success” part of CHAMPS that is very effective. But first, I want to share a picture from a 2nd grade class I recently subbed in.

I love her use of the pocket chart so that she can easily change out cards depending on the activity. I believe in the picture the “A” and “M” are switched, but you basically get the point. Now, she uses the “S” for Signals instead of Success. Students use the ASL signs for bathroom and water to ask permission to do these things, and it also reminds students to raise their hands before speaking.

I prefer using the “S” for success, and so now I will share the system that the first grade uses for Success with CHAMPS.

Students earn smiley faces for each part of the day. If they met all of the CHAMPS expectations, they get their smiley face for that part of the day. If students earn all but one smiley face, they get a sticker at the end of the day to add to their sticker charts. Once they earn a certain amount of stickers, they go to treasure box. You will also notice there is a spot for “Good Citizen,” which Vanessa also talked about in her post. This provides students an opportunity to earn an extra smiley face to make up for one lost, so that they can still earn their sticker at the end of the day.

Whew! This post was longer than I expected! At the end of each blog, I want to share a “Great Idea!” that I saw in a classroom I subbed in. This week I want to share this great idea for a writing bulletin board. Don’t you hate it when all but a few of your students have completed work and there are a few empty spaces on the bulletin board? I would hate for a parent to come in and wonder why there is NOTHING under their child’s name. WELL, this idea is the perfect solution!
This assures that there is no empty spot under any students’ name and assures parents that their child is working hard to get some work up there.

Until next week…
Sandra

How I Became a Genius

Hi friends!
I've missed being here! My husband's birthday and my brother-in-law's is today so we've had a week long celebration for those guys. Lucky ducks, right?? I've also had a whirlwind week at work. I don't know about all of you guys but I'm pooped! We don't get a fall break like you other lucky ducks out there so by this point, my colleagues and I are hauling through... just barely making it past the boogers, fevers, coughs and sneezes. =) Kindergarten teachers understand that one, right?
Well, let me tell you HOW I BECAME A GENIUS!

Last year, my school started using a site called SIGNUPGENIUS.COM to schedule our parent conferences. We could use it for other things as well but we were required to use it for our parent teacher conferences. All of us teachers moaned and groaned upon hearing this BUT it was the BEST decision ever! We use SignUpGenius.com for everything now! Our technology committee uses the site to check out equipment, classrooms use it to schedule volunteers, potlucks, and other things. You know all those parties and celebrations that are coming up... Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas/Hanukkah...well... all of those can be set up quickly by you and you don't have to worry about it again! The free site has a quick and easy process to getting your signups up and running and my favorite part? It automatically sends reminders to all those who have signed up!!! Seriously, that is genius. I can't tell you how many times I've had parents forget things on me (I'm sure you understand!). My second favorite part? You can see, of everyone you have sent the sign up to, who has viewed the sign up, how many times and on what day. Now you can't have any of those parents say, "Oh, I didn't get that email, did you send it to the right one?" ("YES! I send all my emails to the same one!" is the response I say in my head)  Well, those parents can't say that anymore because I can tell! Am I the only one with those parents?? lol. As long as you sign up, you can use it for anything really, not just school stuff!
So I put together a little tutorial about my favorite parts and how simple it really is... I tried my best and I hope you can use the site too! Here it is...

Look at all of those responsible families of mine looking at the sign up list. Many of them multiple times (though I still don't have everyone). Now I can keep my desk clear of unnecessary papers, etc, it's online, ready to go AND sends the reminders for me. All I have to do is keep track of who hasn't responded. On the day of my conferences, I print out the sheets and I am ready to go!
I plan on setting another one up soon for our Halloween centers celebration & parade and then our Thanksgiving Feast and then our Cultural Celebration (around the winter holidays). This site has done a great job of eliminating wasting time, energy and paper! It sets up the time frame for me, emails the parents for me, reminds them for me, reminds me for me, keep me organized and clutter free!
Has anyone else used this site?? I'd love to hear from you. I suggest everyone use it, let me know if you do!
SignUpGenius.com thanked me with a gift card for reviewing their site. The gift card was not dependent on a postive or negative review of the site, but was a compensation for spreading the word. All opinions expressed are my own and I say: GO TO THIS SITE BECAUSE IT IS AMAZING!

Have a great night everybody...

iPod Organization & a tutorial

Hi Everyone!
So, I started using my ipods in my classroom yesterday! woo hoo! These kids are so used to the technology already so I didn't have too much explaining to do. I wanted to share with all of you how I organized them this year and how to use the same type of organization for other things like a computer center and maybe even your blog! You may want to look back at my previous post about how I actually use the ipods because today, it's all about the organization! =)
Here's how to make your ipods look like this...
The picture is a little blurry but each iPod has the iPod number and the students' names
I have 8 iPods and a big chunk of our day is in centers. I separated my groups and then numbered the kids in each group 1-6. I felt it was important to have assigned iPods this year because it is easier to track progress on specific games this way.
To make the background, here are the simple steps that I took:
1. Create a document in your favorite program. My favorite is PowerPoint.
2. Save the document as a JPEG.
3. Email to yourself, save it to your iPod's pictures and change your wallpaper! TaDa! You're done!

If assigning the iPods is too much work or maybe unnessesary, you can just number the iPods using this quick trick.
You can ALSO do this for your classroom computers. This is what mine look like:
The names are different now but you get the point.
I like to set these all up now so that the students know exactly what to expect and when to expect it and I do not have to be a 5 different places at once (well, at least not for these few minutes). The students learn very quickly which iPod to use, which computer to use and there is no fighting or saying "but I didn't get a turn!" because guess what? it's all written down for me! =) Ahhhh, organizational bliss...
Oh! And you can use this trick with things for your blog...see that blog header? I made it in PowerPoint, saved it as a jpeg and then uploaded it to my blog. It's not the prettiest but it works for me (and I'm working on a new one). I am also working on a button to go with my Friday Photo Dump linky party. That reminds me... Start snapping pictures of things around your classroom to dump on Friday. You know those cute pictures that don't really go with your blog post but you want to show them off anyway? Yeah those ones... save them for the Friday Photo Dump linky Par-Tay! lol

Happy Picture taking! I hope someone benefits from this blog post...

Friday Photo Dump

Hi Everyone!
It was my last day in the classroom before the students come... yikes! I feel so rushed! My husband planned a wonderful camping trip for us...we leave TODAY! AAAHHH!!! Doesn't he know how much stuff I have to do??? I am excited to go to rest my brain because it has been working a mile a minute this week. There are so many changes (for the better) at our school this year with teachers, schedules, administration, academic programs and curriculum and of course, students! I have an exciting year ahead of me!
Here are the last few shots I got of my classroom, hopefully next week's photo dump will be work from my students!
Positive Behavior Support System. I use the traffic light to cue the noise level in my classroom.

Marble Jar (more PBS), Helpers chart: everyone has a job here!

Daily Schedule. I review this each and every morning with my class. We say the times and activities chorally.

Calendar board. Most of my helpers have a job to help with some sort of the morning meeting which includes this board.

Computer table.

One of my kindergarten team members made these for us to show the students the steps of what to do at each center, i.e. cut, color, glue, cubby.

I laminated a library pocket to hold all of the choices. There is one for each table.

Trying to stay organized!

My desk area. Teeny tiny but it works.
As I was looking through the pictures I see some things that I forgot to take pictures of. If you are curious about anything you see, feel free to ask!

Happy Friday everyone! I'm off to the river!

As the school year approaches everyone too, don't forget to check out my TPT products, these are my best sellers right now:

It's Thursday? OH NO!

OH NO! My summer is all gone (almost). Monday is school, with students!!! AHHH!!! Ok, Ok, enough with that. Today we had another all day professional development day. We are starting an IWT school wide which is really exciting for me. The problem is that there is no time! Well, we'll make time. Who needs a recess or lunch time, really? lol. Just kidding. After a full day (9-3) of meetings, seminars and what-nots. I was able to get into my classroom for some work. From 6-8 today we also had a Back to School Picnic. It is so crazy and so fun... for the parents and students, not for the teachers. We just want to get into our classrooms! Though, the picnic is important especially for the kinder kiddos that I haven't met yet. During the picnic is the time when everyone finds out which classroom they will be in for the upcoming year so that is always exciting!
Anywho, I'm sharing some of my classroom pictures today and then some more tomorrow. I have to finish everything tomorrow because I am going camping this weekend! Not my idea, my husband's. Not a very good idea given the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL ON MONDAY but I guess I'll survive. haha.

Ok... here we go... let me know what you think!

My creative tools bookshelf

I don't have a sink in my classroom so this is what we rely on: baby wipes and paper towels! (you can get a glimpse of my co-teacher's fiance, oops!)

Classroom Library

Free Choice Activities (I'm missing a label on the scrap paper box)

"Centers Shelf"

Turn it in organizer (Thank you Donor's Choose)

Some of my students sit in cube chairs and others on the carpet squares. They will all have their names on them. (I am missing a few, I have 22 students if you were counting. lol)

I (actually my grandma) sewed on some velcro to the carpet squares to stick the name tags on. I also did this to the cube chairs so that I can switch seats around if I need to.

My teacher library. It's a little messy but you can see that I used manila folders to separate the sections. I'm in the process of re-vamping those folders
"The Blue Bookshelf"

My to do list. This is my third one minus the long one in my head!
That reminds me! Join in on Ms. Shope's Linky Party! She's having a to-do list linky party... You just saw mine, no show us yours! lol
Come back tomorrow for some more close ups of my classroom and hopefully a finished product! =)
Nighty-Night!!

B is for BUILD (continued)

It's Thursday!!! I am ready for the weekend, just one...more...day...
I got caught up with putting up my new bulletin boards today after school so I completely forgot my summer school binder and my guide to everything BUILD related. For now, here are the activities that I have used and am hoping to use with my K-1 and 2-4 summer school classes. I am giving you these from memory because I wanted to be sure I posted today, I will surely forget many things so bear with me! Don't forget to pick up the BUILD freebie from my last post.

B- Buddy Games- These are various games that work on different concepts. Since this is summer school, I want to give exposure to as many things as possible in order to keep their brains fresh. If this were the regular school year, I would put games out that relate to the current area of study with a few review games.
K-1 B
-ZINGO, number puzzles, addition/subtraction puzzles, Flip (also known as war), addition/subtraction Flip, memory, Bankrupt (coin identification game), clear the board
2-4 B
-Multiplication flip, mystery number, racing rectangles, BINGO, power towers, race to the top,

U- Using Manipulatives- I really want the students to get a chance to explore the manipulatives and use them in many different ways. I don't have worksheets or reflections for this but I set many expectations to be sure that they are working on math concepts.
K-1 U
-Balance scales, fruit & dinosaur counters, pattern blocks, pattern blocks picture sheets, rulers (showing only inches), number cubes, unifix cubes, sorting rings, and more
2-4 U
-Scales, unifix cubes, base 10 blocks, calculators, dinosaur counters, rulers, and more

I- Interactive Math- I changed this from the original "Independent Math." The freebie has Interactive Math but if you'd like to have an Independent Math pack, please feel free to ask! I will be happy to set you one to match the others. I am fortunate to have 8 iPods in my classroom so students use these during "I" time. I will also begin to get students to ixl.com and/or XTRAmath.com, I'm not sure which to use yet.

L- Learning Numbers- I have worksheets and daily practice sheets to use during "L" time. Since we do many hands-on, game-like lessons, we try to make sure students also get practice doing some fun and motivating worksheets, because, unfortunately, they just have to know how to do these. Bummer.
K-1 L
-Color by number/addition/subtraction, Connect the dots (count by 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s), domino dot counting, domino dot addition/subtraction, fact families, flashcards and more
2-4 L
-Color by number (double digit addition/subtraction, multiplication, division), number BOGGLE, division bingo, missing numbers multiplication table, flashcards and more

D- Doing Math- This is the time where I can work with students in a small group. I can teach new concepts, review, practice, etc. Doing math time is so important to meeting all students' needs. I also teach how to play new games for buddy games or explain worksheets for learning numbers.

What I forgot to mention in my last post was that I keep track of what the students choose each day. This way I can be sure that each student makes it to each letter and everyone gets a fair chance to play the "fun" things (I actually just mean the iPods, they are quite popular). If it were up to the kiddos, they would choose the same ones over and over but that defeats the whole purpose of BUILD! In the freebie pack, there is a grid to jot down what the students are choosing. You can make 2 double sided copies of it and you are ready for a month!

Here are some snapshots of the kiddos at work...
Sorting rings

iPods
Number scale. This isn't exactly how to use this but look at what he's doing! I would have never thought of that! I asked him to use different types of things on both sides to see what would happen, he was hooked!
Number puzzles

Racing Rectangles
Flip (also known as War)
Make 10. Played like goldfish but instead of pairs, you have to get 2 cards that add up to 10.
Flashcards are kept in a photo album so that I can use them for years to come!
I hope this helps someone out there and please, please, please offer any suggestions. I really am new to this and sharing how I have used it, but I am no expert! Again, let me know if you download the freebie by leaving a comment.

Almost Friday!
